Two routes from Lido di Camaiore to explore the region without the effort

When guests ask us how to get around the area without taking the car every time, our answer is almost always the same: rent an e-bike and try these two routes. One heading north, one heading south. You can cover them over one or two days, depending on how often you like to stop along the way.

It isn’t a grand, epic adventure. It is simply the most comfortable and practical way to discover the region—without searching for parking in the warmer months, sitting in traffic, or overexerting yourself.

You can conveniently park your rented bikes inside the hotel throughout your stay. A quick tip: it’s well worth booking them a day in advance, especially during the summer.

Heading North: Forte dei Marmi and Pietrasanta

Set off from Petit Hotel and join the seafront cycle path heading north. It is a dedicated, well-maintained bike lane running parallel to the beach clubs, and it is particularly pleasant to ride during the early morning hours.

Forte dei Marmi is the first stop, about 10 km away—a smooth, effortless ride. The center is compact and easy to explore on foot once you leave your bike at one of the racks near the main square. It is well worth walking all the way to the end of the pier (il pontile): the view of the coastline and the Apuan Alps in the background is truly striking. If you happen to be there on a Wednesday morning, the weekly open-air market is a classic local staple.

From Forte dei Marmi, head slightly inland toward Pietrasanta, about 5 km away along quiet secondary roads. Long known as the “Little Athens” of Versilia, it is the region’s historic heart for marble and bronze craftsmanship. Piazza Duomo boasts graceful proportions and a constant display of contemporary sculptures. Along the narrow side streets, you will discover artisan workshops, studios, and welcoming spots for a coffee or a relaxed lunch.

For the return trip, you can retrace your steps along the coastal bike path, or extend the ride slightly toward the foothills of Camaiore to coast back down along quiet country roads.

Toward Forte dei Marmi and Pietrasanta on the Tyrrhenian Cycle Route

Marta’s Choice: Piazza Duomo is the place to be at 7:00 PM. Order an ‘aperitivo’ and simply watch the world go by. It’s the most authentic heartbeat of Versilia, where design, fashion, and local history meet under the shadow of the Cathedral.

Heading South: Viareggio, Torre del Lago, and the Serchio River Mouth

This is the longer and more varied of the two routes. Head south along the coastal cycle path, entering Viareggio after about 6 km.

Viareggio’s seafront promenade stands out for its distinct architecture: historic spots like Gran Caffè Margherita and early 20th-century hotel facades offer one of the best-preserved examples of Liberty (Art Nouveau) style in Italy. The entire stretch is pedestrianized and features a dedicated bike path.

Continuing past the harbor and the Pineta di Levante pine forest, asphalt gives way to the packed dirt trails of the Migliarino San Rossore Natural Park. This brings you to Torre del Lago on the shores of Lake Massaciuccoli, where Giacomo Puccini lived and composed his greatest operas. The composer’s villa museum sits right on the water-facing belvedere, while the open-air theater hosts the annual Puccini Festival during the summer months.

For those who want to keep going, the trail extends further south to the mouth of the Serchio River (foce del Serchio). This protected natural reserve is characterized by sand dunes, Mediterranean coastal scrub, and a complete absence of beach resorts—one of the rare remaining stretches of coastline left in its natural state.

The return trip to Petit Hotel retraces the coastal bike path back north (approx. 15 km).

Practical Information & Tips

E-Bikes from Bike Love Versilia: Highly recommended for Route 2. The pedal-assist makes the 35 km southern route completely accessible, allowing you to cover the distance effortlessly.
What to bring: A water bottle, sunscreen, and a bike lock for stops in town centers.
Best time of year: Spring and early autumn offer ideal riding weather, with mild temperatures and fewer people on the cycle paths. During the summer, setting off early in the morning is recommended.
